Southern California’s Superbloom 2019

Wildflowers blooming Southern California

Spring is in the air, everywhere I look around… 🙂 This year Southern California was blessed with a super bloom. It happens only on rare occasions when the weather conditions are just right, with high rainfall during late fall and winter. The peak season for the desert region is early March to early April. The blooming flowers could be seen at multiple locations. We managed to visit two of them – Walker Canyon by Lake Elsinore and Anza-Borrego State Park.

Spring is in the air, everywhere I look around… Začína to hlavne s častými dažďovými zrážkami počas neskorej jesene a zimy.

WALKER CANYON – LAKE ELSINORE

We visited Walker Canyon first. It is located outside the town of Lake Elsinore about 75 miles from San Diego or 70 miles from Los Angeles. The canyon was covered with an incredible amount of wild poppy this year. The spot was so popular that it caused traffic jams. The SUPER bloom was SUPER crowded, especially on weekends. No wonder. The colorful hills were a feast for the eyes. Look at these photos. We parked on the other side of the I-15 and walked about half a mile to the Walker Canyon Trailhead. The trail was a few miles long but we hiked only a short stretch. After a few minutes, we stood in the middle of the orange hills. There were blooming poppies as far as the eye could see.

ANZA-BORREGO DESERT STATE PARK

Another place we visited was the Anza-Borrego State Park. It is the largest state park in California. Blooming flowers were in many areas around the park. Getting to most of the locations required a four-wheel drive vehicle. There were however places which were easily accessible. Especially around the desert town of Borrego Springs.

The park website provided an updated map with locations of blooming flowers and directions. We chose Coyote Canyon. It is located just a few minutes from the town. The entrance to Coyote Canyon was at the end of Giorgio Road, where the pavement stopped. The sandy dirt road continued further into the canyon. We didn’t drive far because we didn’t have a 4-wheel drive car and we were afraid to get stuck. There were already enough flowers to admire at the start of the dirt road.

Webová stránka parku poskytovala aktualizovanú mapu s lokalizáciou kvitnúcich kvetov a smer jazdy. My sme si vybrali Coyote Canyon.

While the hills by Lake Elsinore were covered with orange poppies, wildflowers were diverse in this desert park. There were more species and colors. As I am not a flower expert, I will not provide any scientific names. Photos only 🙂

Bolo tam viac druhov a farieb. Iba fotky 🙂

BORREGO SPRINGS

Borrego Springs

If you have some spare time after exploring all the desert flowers, you can visit another attraction of Borrego Springs – the huge metal sculptures.

Ak ti ostane voľný čas po preskúmaní všetkých púštnych kvetov, môžeš navštíviť ďalšiu atrakciu v Borrego Springs – obrovské kovové sochy.
