Route 66 California – 1st Day

Amboy Route 66 California

Through the long weekend (September 4th) we wanted to make a trip to the Sequoia National Park. When we were looking for accommodation, we could not find any. Everything was booked in the park. So we had to change our plans. We decided to make a 3-day road trip through southern California. San Diego was the starting point. Saturday morning we drove towards the Salton Sea where we visited Salvation Mountain and Bombay Beach. From there we headed up to Lake Havasu City, Arizona. We stayed there overnight. The next morning we visited the old mining town of Oatman. Then we drove to Needles where we started our trip across Californian Route 66.

V sobotu ráno sme vyrazili k Salton Sea, kde sme navštívili Salvation Mountain a Bombay Beach. Odtiaľ sme sa previezli až do Lake Havasu City v Arizone. Zostali sme tam na noc. Nasledujúci deň ráno sme navštívili staré banské mesto Oatman. Potom sme sa odviezli do Needles, kde sme začali našu cestu po kalifornskej Route 66.

Part 1 – from Needles to Barstow
Časť 1 – z Needles do Barstow

NEEDLES

The Route 66 crosses the Californian border in Needles and runs up to the ocean in Santa Monica. Like in other states, some sections of US 66 were extended and used in the construction of new interstates. In other places, where a new interstate lead in a different direction, old sections remained as a tourist attraction known as the Historic Route 66. You need an itinerary to drive Route 66 because it would be difficult to find all of the places on the original route.

Route 66 prekročuje Kalifornské hranice v Needles a vedie až k oceánu v Santa Monica.

Needles Route66 California
Once upon a time Needles was a major border stop on Route 66. Today I-40 bypasses the town. Most of the Historic Route 66 is now Broadway Street. We drove a section of it on Sunday and the street was very quiet. We wanted to see two things there. One of them was a huge wagon which is basically a welcome sign to the town. According to the description this wagon was used in the filming of 20 Mule Team (I have never heard about it) in the early 1940’s. It was brought to Needles in 1947 where it stood in front of the El Rancho Motel until 1962. It was then given to the city of Needles.

Needles Route66 California
Across the street stood the retro Palms Apartments, previously known as the Palms Motel. Surrounded by the palm trees it looked like an oasis on the street.

Oproti, na druhej strane cesty stála retro budova –  Palms Apartments, predtým známa ako Palms Motel. Obklopená palmami vyzerala ako oáza na ulici.

Needles Route66 California

The second place we stopped by was the Motel 66. It served as an overnight stop for travelers in the glory days of Route 66. It is the cutest looking motel I have ever seen on Route 66. We were wondering if it still in operation. There was a No Vacancy sign on the door. It, however, looked like a house were somebody lives, and not like a motel.

GOFFS

Another stop was Goffs. This tiny community lies in the middle of nothing. We drove there because a museum was supposed to be there. Although the museum was there, it was closed. I should have checked it in advance – my mistake. So I took a few photos from the road.

Ďalšou zastávkou bol Goffs. Táto malá komunita leží uprostred ničoho. Vybrali sme tam, pretože tam malo byť múzeum. Múzeum tam síce bolo, ale zatvorené. Mala som si to overiť dopredu – moja chyba. Tak som urobila zopár fotografií iba tak z cesty.

Goffs Route66 California

Goffs Route66 California
There was a mailbox with information brochures in front of the gate. I took one. The dates of operation were Sat-Sun-Mon from October 1 to June 30.  And we were there in September. The museum was established by the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association to preserve the natural and cultural history of the Mojave Desert.

Pred bránou bola poštová schránka s informačnými brožúrami. Jednu som si vzala. Otvorený bývajú SO-NE-PO od 1. októbra do 30. júna. A my sme tam boli v septembri. Múzeum bolo založené združením Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association, ktoré sa snaží zachovať prírodnú a kultúrnu históriu púšte Mojave.

They restored the local Schoolhouse built in 1914. The school closed its doors after Route 66 was realigned.

They built a collections center in the image of the original Goffs Depot. The original depot was built in 1900 by the Sante Fe Railway.

Goffs Route66 California
The area included some antiques and vintage vehicles. It could be an interesting visit. Maybe next time.

Po areáli boli vystavené nejaké starožitností a historické vozidlá. Mohla to byť zaujímavá návšteva. Možno nabudúce.

KELBAKER ROAD

From Goffs we planned to continue along the National Old Trails Highway through Essex, Danby, Chambless to Amboy, but this section of road was closed for traffic. Since we wanted visit Amboy, we took Kelbaker Road which joined the National Old Trails Highway a bit further down. This road turned out to be a quite nice scenic road.

ROY’S MOTEL CAFE

Roy’s Motel Cafe in Amboy is a popular stop for today’s travelers on the historic Route 66. Although it lies in the middle of nothing, a lot of tourists stop there.

Amboy Route66 California
A huge retro sign of the motel was the first thing we noticed. Roy’s which was named after Roy Crowl started as a gas and service station in the desert. After he cooperated with his son-in-law, Herman Burris, the business grew. A motel and a cafe were opened. The town of Amboy expanded as well. It had its own post office, a school, and even a dirt airstrip. Roy’s employed up to 70 people.

Potom, čo začal spolupracovať so svojim zaťom Hermanom Burrisom, biznis sa rozrástol a otvorili motel a reštauráciu. Mesto Amboy sa tiež rozrastalo. Malo svoju poštu, školu, dokonca i poľnú pristávaciu dráhu. Roy’s zamestnával do 70 ľudí.

After the I-40 bypass was opened – business declined rapidly. There were a couple of attempts from new owners to operate Roy’s Motel Cafe, but they were unsuccessful. The reason for failure could be a lack of infrastructure, mainly water supply. The property was sold to Albert Okura who promised to preserve the town. He also owns the Original McDonald’s site in San Bernardino where he operates a museum.

Amboy Route66 California
Although the motel is not in operation, the abandoned cabins next to the road were open to exploring. Amboy is a little ghost town. The cafe, however, was open – selling some drinks, snacks and Route 66 souvenirs.

Hoci motel nebol v prevádzke, opustené ubytovacie kabínky vedľa cesty boli otvorené na preskúmanie. Amboy je malé mestečko duchov. Cafe však bolo otvorené. Predávali tam nápoje, občerstvenie a suveníry Route 66.

US 66 shields painted on both lanes of the road and the motel sign in the background are a perfect place to take a photo as a memory of traveling across Route 66.

LUDLOW

Continuing along the old Route 66 towards Ludlow we should have passed Bagdad, Siberia, and Klondike. However, there was no sign of these places.

Pokračovaním po starej Route 66 smerom k Ludlow sme mali prechádzať cez Bagdad, Siberia a Klondike. Po týchto miestach však nebola žiadna stopa.

Ludlow Route66 California

Ludlow was still in existence. It was a popular stop on Route 66 including motel, cafe, gas station and garage. A little part of the town is still active because of its close proximity to the interstate. There we found the new Ludlow Cafe and a motel which were both open.

Ludlow Route66 California

Since the town was based on the mines and the railroad there were a few remains of the mining facilities standing in front of the cafe as decoration.

Ludlow Route66 California

Next to the cafe also stood an old abandoned garage and gas station. Two vintage vehicles were left there as an attraction. Since this part of Ludlow offered services, there was a new gas station located nearby.

Pri reštaurácií tiež stála stará opustená garáž a čerpacia stanica. Dvaja veteráni tam zostali ako atrakcia. Keďže táto časť Ludlow ponúkala služby, nová čerpacia stanica sa nachádzala vedľa.

NEWBERRY SPRINGS

Newberry Springs is another town through which the original Route 66 ran.

Ďalšie mesto, cez ktoré pôvodná Route 66 viedla bolo Newberry Springs.

Newberry Springs, Route66 California 016
First, we passed an abandoned gas station with cool old gas pumps. It is a former Whiting Brothers Gas Station, known as Dry Creek. According to the letters on the front wall of the building it looked like it was once called Tony’s Cafe offering Italian and American dishes.

Najprv sme prechádzali okolo opustenej čerpacej stanice so starými benzínovými čerpadlami.

Newberry Springs, Route66 California 016
Bagdad Cafe is, however, the major roadside attraction in Newberry Springs. It was originally the Sidewinder Cafe. After the movie called Bagdad Cafe was filmed there it became famous and they changed the name. The restaurant is still open. The original cafe which was the inspiration for the movie was in the town of Bagdad. We passed it (between Amboy and Ludlow), but the town does not exist anymore. I browsed a trailer from the movie and it looks like an interesting movie. Maybe we will watch it.

Avšak hlavnou atrakciou v Newberry Springs je Bagdad Cafe.

Once upon a time, the Henning Motel stood next to the cafe, but it was demolished. Only the old sign remains.

DAGGETT

From Newberry Spring we drove to Daggett. We were looking for an old Garage and a Stone Hotel in the old part of the town. Daggett was founded when silver deposits were discovered in the nearby Calico mines. At that time, it became quite a big town, but after all the mining operations ceased, the town died.

Z Newberry Spring sme sa presunuli do Daggett. V starej časti mesta sme hľadali starú garáž a kamenný hotel.

Daggett, Route66 California
The former Garage dates back to the 1880’s. It served as a locomotive maintenance shed for the narrow-gauge railroad. Previously it stood nearby the Calico mines. It was moved to Daggett in 1912. Later it became an automotive garage and machine shop.

Pôvodná garáž sa datuje do roku 1880. Slúžila na údržbu lokomotív úzkorozchodnej železnice. Predtým stála v blízkosti Calico baní. V roku 1912 ju presťahovali do Daggett. Neskôr sa z nej stala autoopravovňa.

The historic Stone Hotel was originally a two-story building with a long balcony on the top floor. It has survived three fires, the latest was in 1908. Fire destroyed the top floor.

Near the Stone Hotel stands the Desert Market. The shop was in operation. In its original place stood a General Supply Store, but it was destroyed by fire in 1908 as well. The former owner decided to rebuild it and made it fireproof. The store was the first cement structure built in the Mojave Desert.

WHERE WE ATE

Daggett, Route66 California

The day was coming to the end and we were hungry. We drove to Peggy Sue’s Diner. It is located near Daggett. I have to admit it is a restaurant you have to visit when traveling across Route 66. It is a real, old-fashioned, 50’s – style diner. They started only with 9 counter stools and 3 booths. Today it is an extensive diner with a lot of memorabilia hanging on the walls.

Deň sa blížil ku koncu a my sme boli hladní. Odviezli sme do reštaurácie Peggy Sue’s Diner.

There is also a gift shop with Route 66, Coca-Cola souvenirs, and many other things. Elvis can even read you your fortune for 50 cents. A small dinosaur park is located in the backyard of the shop.

We left the diner at sunset. We drove to Barstow where we had booked accommodation. The next day we continued on Route 66 towards Los Angeles.

Keď sme odchádzali z reštaurácie, slnko už zapadalo. Odviezli sme sa do Barstow, kde sme mali rezervované ubytovanie. Nasledujúci deň sme pokračovali v Route 66 smerom do Los Angeles.
